All Whites New Strip Revealed
NIKE REVEAL NEW ALL WHITE STRIP FOR WORLD CUP
The All Whites are going green for the World Cup with the release of their new playing strip for the tournament.
Their kit suppliers Nike unveiled the new uniform in
Auckland yesterday and it is environmentally friendly with the jerseys made entirely from recycled polyesters, each one produced from up to eight recycled plastic bottles.
New Zealand will play in their traditional white strip for their pool matches against
Slovakia and
Paraguay although they are likely to wear their alternate black strip against world champions
Italy. The All Whites will wear their new outfit for the first time in next month's warmup match against
Australia in
Melbourne.
Nike is supplying kits for nine teams at the World Cup including hosts
South Africa and claim in making the new range they prevented nearly 13 million plastic bottles, totalling nearly 254,000kg of polyester waste, from going to landfill sites.
This amount would be enough to cover more than 29 football pitches. New technology used makes the jerseys 15% lighter than their previous model as well as giving it 10 percent more stretch allowing for a slimmer cut. They feature ventilation zones down the sides and in the numbers on the back. "It certainly feels lighter," said
New Zealand striker Shane Smeltz. "I like the feel and the fit." The jersey has a v-neck collar and is white with two small flashes of black near the hem of each sleeve. On the back of the jersey's neck is a graphic that reads "
New Zealand". The Silver Fern is included on the crest of the New Zealand Football Federation which has a gold trim around it.
The
New Zealand unveiling was timed to coincide with similar launches in
Australia,
Brazil, The Netherlands,
Portugal,
USA,
South Korea,
Serbia,
Slovenia and
South Africa.
