Battlers from Whangarei |
|
An interview with goalkeeper Darren Bowness summed up the Central Brown’s team effort in their away Chatham Cup match with Delta Tapware Metro.
“We came to Auckland not knowing anything about our opposition, but there was plenty of hope in the boys. We knew that if we all helped each other, we could leave with a respectable scoreline”
And that is exactly what they did, as this team of reserve graders from Whangarei talked, coached and carried each other through the game.
There were goals aplenty, nine in all, but the Central Brown team cheered themselves that they had kept the tally to under 10, and had come close to scoring themselves.
And the cheers were even louder in the clubrooms after as they learned of the ignominy of some of their fefellow Whangarei teams who faired much worse against similar opposition.
The first goal was not until the 20 minute mark, scored by Sakdy Phommahaxay, though there were plenty of close calls and the woodwork was hit more than once.
Only one further goal was scored in the first half, Heath McCormack, in the 42nd minute finishing a fine series of moves from Phommahaxay and Danny McHenerey to frive low into the net.
After the break, the goals came a little more frequently as the Central Brown team tired, and Metro showed their ascendancy with scores by Hoani Edwards (49th minute), McHenery (55th), Kara Waetford (60th), McHenery (66th), McCormack (79th), McCormack (81st), and McCormack (86th).
The game was played in a good mood all the way through, and the referee andhis assistants had little to do except let the game carry its way through to the end.
Next up, and Metro return to Fred Taylor Park to meet Waitakere City on Saturday 22nd May.
